General Therapy Stages
"Life is sacred: Live on purpose. Be intoxicated with this world and astonished with the world you imagine. Growth is a journey...success does not require arrival."
General Stages of Psychotherapy
It is impossible to define the exact stages of therapy any one individual will progress through on their unique journey. Additionally, there are as many diagrams and descriptions of stages out in the marketplace as there are treatment theories. My goal here for you is to simplify some of the most common stages applicable to most (but not all) mental health disorders.
Realize that your path or the path of your loved one will be unique to their needs and circumstances. Also realize that healing does not occur in a straight line like most diagrams tend to portray. Healing has many dimensions and there are times where areas may be revisited for greater clarity, self-understanding, or tools and skills may evolve to new levels, creating a change in the process. Additionally, there are a variety of factors that can contribute to therapy plateaus, road blocks, re-visits, progress, successes, and more. Healing is a dynamic process that is truly unique to each individual.
If you're ready, let's explore a few of the common elements in healing processes with the diagram and the descriptive areas below.
