What is Hoarding Disorder?Definition
Hoarding Disorder is a compulsive behavior typically characterized by individuals who acquire items and are unable to part with them for a variety of reasons. Hoarding is not the same as collecting. Many individuals are avid collectors; however, their collections are a source of pride and the subject of conversation. They may have a certain level of expertise in their collection. Collections are also generally organized in such a way as to facilitate their presentation such as in a special area or room. There is no loss of livable space or risk to health. Hoarding, on the other hand, is often characterized by embarrassment rather than pride and may or may not include organization of the volume of items acquired. Hoarding also features a significant loss of livable space and often health risks. Additionally, Hoarding Disorder may be accompanied by Major Depression, ADHD, Social Anxiety, or other mental illnesses. Common Challenges Compulsive hoarding often reaches a level where it compromises an individual's ability to function in many vital areas of life. Common impairments to healthy living can include social isolation, problems with partners or family relationships, health risks, and financial issues. Prevalence Hoarding Disorder affects approximately two to five percent of the population. Signs Individuals who hoard can exhibit any of the following behaviors:
